PRE-WASDE MONITOR / STRUCTURAL BID — UNCHANGED · FRAMEWORK NOT TRIGGERED
The August 12 WASDE delivered a directionally friendly yield miss — but a record production print and an ending-stocks build meant the balance sheet loosened, not tightened. This note checks IU's pre-committed activation scorecard against the actual release.
The August 12, 2026 WASDE delivered the first survey-based yield of the season at 52.7 bushels per acre — down 0.3 bpa from the July trend estimate of 53.0, a directionally bullish miss. But harvested area was revised up sharply to 85.8 million acres (from 84.4 million in July), and the acreage increase more than offset the yield miss: production was raised 44 million bushels to a new US record of 4.519 billion bushels, beating the average trade estimate by 41 million bushels.
Crush was raised 30 million bushels to 2.78 billion. Critically, 2026/27 ending stocks were raised to 320 million bushels (from 310 million in July) — the balance sheet loosened, not tightened. Stocks-to-use rose to approximately 7.0%, up from 6.9%. November futures closed the day up 14 1/2 cents at $11.83 1/4, having briefly traded near $12.00 intraday before retreating into the close. A same-day flash sale of 244,000 tonnes to China brought cumulative 2026/27 commitment fulfillment to roughly 17% of the 25 MMT target.
Why this does not change posture: IU's Section X framework requires at least three of four Tier 1 conditions to fire before upgrading from monitor to accumulate. The yield print missed the report's own 52.5 bpa activation bar — directionally encouraging, but a clean miss on the specific threshold set in advance, not a judgment call after the fact. Combined with a production record and a stocks build rather than a draw, the balance sheet loosened against the tightening thesis the bull case depends on.
